Important Change To Foreign Language Requirement in Arts and Humanities
Dear Students,
As Keene State College makes the transition to the new Integrative Studies Program, changes are underway in the foreign language requirement affecting majors in the School of Arts and Humanities.
For all currently matriculated students, as well as for students entering in fall 2007, the minimal requirement for majors in American Studies, Art, Communication, English, Film Studies, History, Journalism, Music, or Theatre and Dance has now become one course in a foreign language, normally French, Spanish, or German 101, 102, 200, 201, or higher. French and Spanish 100 courses in language and culture do not satisfy the requirement.
Students should complete this requirement as early in their college careers as possible. Those with two or more years of recent high school study in French, Spanish, or German must enroll in 102 or above. Those with three or more years of recent high school study should enroll in 200, 201 or above. Students may also satisfy the requirement through AP or CLEP credit. Those with near-native fluency in a language should consult Modern Languages faculty for appropriate placement.
Students may also fulfill this requirement by enrolling in a study abroad program in a non-English speaking country, provided the program has been approved by their major department in consultation with the National and International Exchange Center.
Students with documented learning disabilities should apply to the Office of Disability Services and then to the Chair of Modern Languages to seek a waiver.
101-201 level courses completed to satisfy the language requirement may be applied to the Arts and Humanities component of the Integrative Studies Program.
Students uncertain about which level of language to enroll in for summer or fall 2007 may take the hour-long placement test in French, German, or Spanish on Friday March 23rd at 12 noon in Morrison 202.
No credit is given for this exam, which can be taken only once. The test covers vocabulary, reading, and grammar questions, as well as a short composition. Upon completion, you will be advised about the course level where you should begin language study.
No pre-registration is necessary, and there is no fee for the exam. Bring your college ID and a #2 pencil to take the test.Â
Questions about the language requirement should be directed to the Chair of Modern Languages, Professor Helen Frink, Morrison 128; e-mail hfrink@keene.edu.
